Renters Insurance for College Students and Dorms

College students have valuable electronics in places with high foot traffic, making coverage important, but the right policy depends on where they live.

Living in a dorm

A student in a dorm is often covered under a parent's homeowners policy, typically up to about 10% of the policy's personal-property limit. Check the limit and whether it is enough for laptops and other gear.

Living off campus

Once a student rents an apartment, the parent's policy usually no longer applies. An off-campus student should buy their own renters policy, which is inexpensive at $15-$30 a month.

What to look for

  • Replacement-cost coverage for electronics
  • A liability limit of at least $100,000
  • Off-premises coverage for items taken to class or while traveling

Tip

High-value items like a gaming PC or camera may need a scheduled-property rider for full protection.
